In life we can thrive or wither depending on the health of our soul. Just like a beautiful garden our soul needs essential elements to grow. Even a beginner gardener knows that you have to have the basics: good soil, light, and water.
The soil is critical to the health of the garden. The Bible compares soil to the condition of our heart (Matthew 13:19). Before a gardener would plant he or she works the soil. They remove all the rocks, glass, and weeds by the root. As we come daily to our times of devotions of prayer, we can allow the Holy Spirit to remove all of the roots of rejection, fear, guilt, condemnation and shame in our soul.
Plants need light to grow. It is important when planting a garden to plant where the garden will receive hours of light a day. Jesus declared that He is the light of the world. He or she who follows Him will not walk in darkness but have the light of life. When we spend time in our devotions with Jesus, His light shines into our souls.
All gardens need water and water is particularly crucial during the growing seasons. Psalm 1 says that the man who meditates on the Word day and night is like a tree planted by rivers of water. It says this person will yield its fruit in season, its leaf will not wither and whatsoever he does will prosper. As we read and meditate on the Word of God, we are watering our soul.
As we allow the Holy Spirit to work the condition of our heart and we come each day to prayer and meditation on the Word of God, we grow effortlessly. In season we will become like a beautiful well-watered garden, flourishing and thriving in every realm of life.
3 John 1:2 - Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers.
